L’opera “L’Appesa” è un’interpretazione del dodicesimo Arcano Maggiore dei Tarocchi. L’Appesa – XII – The Choice raffigura una donna vittoriana sospesa per una caviglia a un ramo dell’Albero della Conoscenza, legata con la tecnica dello shibari, una pratica meditativa che trasforma la vulnerabilità in apertura. Il serpente simboleggia il femminile, così come la Luna, qui in fase di plenilunio.

La tecnica

La xilografia su linoleum, detta anche linoleografia, è una tecnica di stampa artistica che utilizza il linoleum come matrice al posto del legno. Si inizia preparando la matrice: si disegna il motivo a rovescio sul linoleum e si procede all’incisione con sgorbie di varie misure, scavando le aree che si vogliono lasciare bianche nella stampa finale. Le parti che rimangono in rilievo vengono poi inchiostrate con rullo e quindi pressate su carta, manualmente con un baren, un cucchiaio o un torchio. Il risultato è un’immagine stampata in positivo, caratterizzata da superfici nitide e contrasti decisi.

The work “L’Appesa” is an interpretation of the twelfth Major Arcana of the Tarot. The Hanged Woman – XII – The Choice depicts a Victorian woman suspended by her ankle from a branch of the Tree of Knowledge, tied using the shibari technique, a meditative practice that transforms vulnerability into openness. That snake symbolizes the feminine, as does the Moon, here in its full phase.

The technique

Linoleum woodcut, also known as linoleography, is an artistic printing technique that uses linoleum instead of wood as the printing plate. The first step is to prepare the plate: the design is drawn in reverse on the linoleum and then engraved with gouges of various sizes, carving out the areas that are to remain white in the final print. The parts that remain in relief are then inked with a roller and pressed onto paper, either manually with a baren, a spoon or a press. The result is a positive print, characterised by sharp surfaces and strong contrasts.
